Job Opportunity: Development Director

A new position, Way Station’s Development Director is responsible for raising resources and support for the organization’s mission activities. Way Station utilizes dynamic governance (also referred to as sociocracy), which prioritizes distributed leadership and shared power. The ideal candidate for this position will share a commitment to these priorities and demonstrate interpersonal and leadership skills required to thrive in such an organizational setting. In addition to supporting development goals for the annual operating budget, the Development Director will oversee special campaigns including for a new transitional and emergency housing program. About Way Station: Located in North Conway, New Hampshire, the Way Station ( provides safe, welcoming, non-judgmental space and supportive services for the homeless & housing insecure population of Mt Washington Valley. Created in June of 2019, the Way Station targets basic day-to-day services in an effort to improve immediate quality of life and diminish suffering. Way Station currently serves approximately 30 clients each week. In the last quarter of 2021 Way Station had over 600 client contacts and provided over 450 client service deliveries logging over 360 volunteer hours. Way Station partners with local and regional service providers across a wide spectrum, working to develop relationships for effective and efficient referrals and collaboration. At the beginning of 2021, Way Station crafted an expanded basic vision for its services, stemming from two fundamental organizational desires: 1) to care for individuals, recognizing their differences and strengths and promoting their autonomy; 2) to ensure that individual care is multifaceted, with deep, community-level involvement and commitment. Three new service areas are being developed to complement the current basic/day services: transitional and emergency housing, a stabilization fund to cover clients’ short term emergency costs (which often trigger homelessness and housing instability), and a program to support individuals moving out of poverty. Responsibilities:

  1. In collaboration with the Way Station leadership, coordinate development planning including campaigns, budgets, strategies, branding, and policies

  2. Cultivating and stewarding individual donors including prospect research, donor relationship management, donor recognition

  3. Managing annual appeals and special campaigns including developing communications, campaign outreach, campaign followup

  4. Managing the grants program including identifying needs, researching prospects, developing proposals, tracking applications, submitting reports

  5. Managing donor information including data entry, reports, gift processing, thank you letters

  6. Event coordination for the organization’s own special events and participating at other special events

  7. Marketing and communications support such as annual reports, newsletters, website, social media, press releases

  8. Development program evaluation and reports as requested by the Way Station leadership

  9. Supporting other mission-related work as needed

Skills and experience:

  • At least 5 years relevant work experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Able to take initiative with minimal supervision

  • Attention to detail

  • Proficiency with document and spreadsheet creation and editing, database management

Salary and benefits: The Development Director position is initially half time / 20 hours per week, with department/position growth expected to occur in tandem with operational and program expansion. Way Station offers generous compensation and benefits, commensurate with experience. Starting salary is between $30,000-$37,000 with benefits including flexible schedule, remote working, and optional health insurance / retirement stipend.
